GB3

The calendar, dates and everything you need to know about the GB3 Championship

Championship

Since its inaugural season in 2013, the GB3 Championship has forged a reputation as the UK’s leading single-seater championship, with consistently strong grids and an emphasis on equality and affordability.

As a result, the championship has attracted a significant number of highly talented drivers, and past champions George Russell and Will Palmer, plus Lando Norris, Tom Gamble and most recently Johnathan Hoggard, have all won the newly-titled Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Award, the world’s most prestigious prize for young aspiring F1 drivers.

The new Tatuus MSV-022 car, which features the halo safety feature as well as aerodynamic and power upgrades, has been introduced for the 2022 season. The new car produces around 25% more downforce while the Mountune engine now puts out 250 brake horsepower, while meeting all the latest safety standards.

GB3 routinely attracts drivers from around the world and 2021 saw a dominant Zak O'Sullivan lift the Championship trophy for Carlin - 164 points ahead of runner-up Ayrton Simmons.

The championship will run alongside British GT again in 2022, continuing the traditional package that ran successfully on UK circuits for so many years.

Championship Format

The GB3 Championship is run by MSVR and comprises 24 races across eight events.

The weekend format typically includes a 20 minute qualifying session and three 20 minute races.

The grid for the first is set in qualifying order, while the grid for the second is in order of each driver's second fastest lap. The race three starting order will be the reverse order of the fastest times achieved in qualifying prior to any penalties applied during or following qualifying. To be included in the reversal, each driver’s fastest lap time in qualifying needs to be within 103% of the overall fastest lap. Such a format provides exciting racing, the opportunity for drivers to develop overtaking skills.

Should an event incorporate a Race FOUR, the grid for that race will be decided by an average of the drivers two fastest lap times from Race ONE, TWO or THREE. Only one lap from each of the two races will be included in calculation of the average.

The GB3 Champion receives a free of charge two day FIA Formula 3 test at Valencia in November. This builds on GB3's record of moving drivers on to the FIA F3 Championship, including the two most recent champions Clement Novalak and Kaylen Frederick.

Johnathan Hoggard and Ayrton Simmons are other alumni to have impressed in FIA F3 machinery in recent months, and this year's champion will get the opportunity to show their skills during the official two day test.

Live Coverage

A significantly enhanced TV offering for the GB3 Championship means the majority of races are streamed live online. This strengthens GB3’s comprehensive free-to-air broadcast package, which includes the extension of MSV’s partnership with ITV to broadcast a one-hour highlights show on ITV4.

Most of the Sunday races, including those at Spa-Francorchamps, will be streamed live on the internet in full-HD 1080p quality, and will feature detailed on-screen graphics showing race positions and intervals between drivers. The standalone Silverstone round in August will not be shown live due to it being outside the British GT package,

An expert commentator, expected to be David Addison, Martin Haven or Andy McEwan, will voice all the races, with David Addison continuing in his role as commentator for the ITV4 highlights programme.
